11/18/25 Authoring Tool and Game Updates

Auth System Update
We have updated our authentication system in order to support more features in the future. Your experience shouldn't be any different. Let us know if you run into any issues.
Authoring Tool Improvements
"Preview Task" Function
Screenshot 2025-11-17 at 2
In addition to preview the whole quest, you now have the option to
directly preview the task you are on
, no matter its position in the quest flow. The default when you are on a task will be to start the preview at that task, but you can use the drop-down arrow to select "Entire Quest" to play through the quest in its entirety.
This should greatly improve your workflow speed in being able to test changes to quests, which our team has been greatly enjoying during testing!
Private Link and Assessment Data
Now every time you publish a quest, two links are generated.
  • Public link: can be
    accessed by anyone
    but
    no assessment data
    would be recorded.
  • Private link:
    requires a login
(contact us to set up player accounts) and
    assessment data
would be recorded. Right now, this only goes to a database, with future dashboards and integrations on the roadmap.
You can share the links according to your needs.
Quest Flow UI Updates
Screenshot 2025-11-17 at 12
  • In addition to previous interactions (double-clicking for edit, backspace for deletion), more explicit deletion and edit buttons will now be present when a task is selected;
  • In addition to clicking, now drag-and-drop interaction is added for adding a task;
  • The double-click-to-edit trigger area has been changed to only the icon, to prevent accidental navigation while trying to edit the notes;
  • The connectors now work similarly to those in dialogue editor - you can drag an existing connector to a different task, or drop it in the air to remove it.
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed the bug that if you delete an item in the middle of a Picture Click step list, the item right after it also gets deleted.
  • Fixed the issue that when there are consecutive steps in Picture Click with the same picture, sometimes there would be "Loading..." on top of the picture.
  • Fixed the crash that sometimes happens when previewing right after saving changes.
Dialogue Mechanic New "Callout" Function
The dialogue mechanic now has a new function. If you want to highlight certain content, simply "star" the node. Then you can choose from a list of predefined callout messages or have a custom one.

This is how it looks in the game:

We see this feature as being useful for calling out key vocabulary, important evidence, choices the player must make (such as choosing a claim for an argument), or other use cases you'll design!
Game UI Improvements
  • Picture Click UI updated to reduce confusion and make sure players see the instructions before the pictures. Now there's a type-in animation for the instructions and the pictures would not show up until the animation is finished.
Hit Spacebar to skip the animation.
The skip is only intended as designer testing shortcut information, not user facing.
  • Interaction task notification banner UI updated to include indicator of timer progress
  • Task Tracker UI updated to draw attention when the task updates
  • Now W/A/S/D (with caps lock on) would work for moving the character the same way as w/a/s/d (caps lock off)
  • Scroll-to-zoom is disabled to reduce confusion

Free Response Dialogue
In the dialogue editor, we have added the response type of "free response", which will allow the player to type their own response instead of choosing from pre-existing options. The response is saved but we have not built a dashboard to display their responses yet.
Bugfixes & Improvements
Quest Editor
  • Fixed the issue that sometimes task data of an unlinked task could get erased;
Now you can view and edit unlinked tasks
    as well as linked tasks.
  • Re-styled task definition nav tabs so more could be visible at once; Added scroll-to-view so that the the active tab will always be in view.
Dialogue Task
  • Fixed the issue that the preview/game crashes if the quest contains a dialogue task that has unconnected nodes. You should still be able to preview/play it, though will not be able to progress past the problematic conversation.
  • Fixed the issue that sometimes branching dialogue responses get erased when publishing.
  • Fixed the issue that the connection handle (the dot on the top-left corner) on the top of the dialogue node stays grey even if it's disconnected.
  • Made sure that when a dialogue connection is in selection, it gets on the top of the layers.
Picture Click
  • Fixed the issue that assessment data in
    Picture click
does not clear out after toggling assess-ability off.
Assets
  • Fixed the issue that sometimes the player can fall through the ground in the Clinic map
  • Fixed the issue that clicking the
    Upload
button multiple times when uploading an asset would result in duplicated assets.
Dialogue Editor
We have built the UI for the dialogue editor and you will no longer have to manually edit the JSON. Your existing dialogues have been converted.

Here's a video of how to create a dialogue using the dialogue editor.
Tutorials and Tooltips
While balancing technical/time constraints with user experience, we realize that some of our UI is not the most intuitive. Some tutorials and tooltips have been added in order to mitigate it, before we are able to make improvements.

Task Tabs No Longer Out of Order
The task tabs are now in order of the quest flow, and are labeled with numbers.
Last week, we opened early access to the
Tyto Authoring Studio
—our next chapter: an authoring platform that enables partners to build authentic, empowering, deeply pedagogical learning quests.
As part of this transition, we’re beginning the process of
shutting down our classic Tyto Online experience this week (week of September 15, 2025)
. If you’re an active Tyto Online subscriber, your subscription has been canceled and we’ve issued a
refund for your most recent charge (you should see it within 7–10 days)
.
Tyto Online has been a labor of love. Thank you to every student, family, and educator who explored with us—you shaped what comes next. While there’s
no consumer-facing app right now
, the future of Tyto will arrive through partner-built experiences made with Tyto Authoring Studio.
If you’re a publisher, curriculum developer, workforce training provider, or higher-ed team interested in building with us, we’d love to collaborate.
FAQ on the Transition
Summary of changes:
  • We’re starting the Tyto Online v1 shutdown
    week of September 15, 2025.
  • Active subscriptions are canceled
with the most recent charge refunded (appears in 7–10 days).
  • We’ve launched
Early Access to Tyto Authoring Studio
, focused on partner-built experiences. There’s no consumer app right now.
Why we’re doing this:
Tyto Online showed us how powerful authentic, real-world learning can be. To scale impact, we’re moving to a partner-driven model with Tyto Authoring Studio—so publishers, curriculum creators, and workforce orgs can build and ship experiences at scale.
Key details:
  • Access & timeline: Tyto Online access winds down during the week of Sept 15.
  • Refunds: We’ve processed refunds for the most recent subscription charge; funds typically appear in 7–10 days.
  • Data & privacy: We’ll retire accounts following shutdown, with plans to retain a backup of data for potentially a new version of the consumer-facing app in the future.
  • Consumers: There is no direct-to-consumer product at this time.
  • Partners: Interested in building with the new Content Authoring Studio? Join the waitlist.
